Advisor on the sustainability of public interest journalism
Sameer Padania’s work focuses on defending, supporting and growing the public interest journalism ecosystem in the UK, Europe and beyond. He is leading on the Local News Plans project in the UK for the Public Interest News Foundation, is the Strategic Advisor to the pan-European Journalism Funders Forum, and in 2021, he served as Lead Rapporteur for the Forum on Information and Democracy’s global report calling on governments to deliver A New Deal for Journalism.
Over the last decade, he has worked for leading philanthropic and journalism funders in the UK, Europe and US as a grantmaker, assessor and advisor, and has written widely-used practical guides on funding journalism and media and investigative journalism. He began his career working on a range of journalism, digital media, activism and policy initiatives across the developing world. He helped to found the Charitable Journalism Project, is a trustee of the Indigo Trust and of The Doc Society, and a Fellow of the RSA. He is a member of the judging panel for the 2022 Orwell Prize for Journalism.
